My father always stressed the importance of being able to do everything yourself. Why pay someone else to fix your roof leak? Why pay to have your drain snaked? The benefit of this cheapness and his reliance on forced labor (myself) is that I can now do nearly any home renovation/repair.
I can frame walls, run wiring, braze plumbing, do exquisite tile work, paint, etc. I love the satisfaction derived from seeing a job well done and estimating how much I saved by doing it myself.
